In 2020 we received a reimagining of the 1997 classic Final Fantasy VII, appropriately named Final Fantasy VII Remake. The game sought to introduce new players to the series and bring back fans of the game by creating a trilogy based on the original plot and characters that deviated from the story to provide a fresh but familiar experience on a new generation of consoles. The game released to great reviews from critics and fans alike who appreciated Square Enix's choice to completely remake and reimagine the game instead of just remastering it with a fresh coat of paint. The developers seem to be leaning even more towards this path with their next installment which they have announced is titled Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

In a series of posts written on Twitter by the game's Creative Director Tetsuya Nomura, Director Naoki Hamaguchi and Producer Yoshinori Kitase we got some interesting insights into plans and direction for the game and the trilogy.

One of the highlights include this statement from Nomura lending further evidence towards the trilogy's branching away from the narrative of the original

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is being designed so that people can enjoy this game whether they know the original game or not

Nomura also claims that

work has already begun on the third game

Most importantly of all however is Kitase's reveal of when we can expect Final Fantasy VII Rebirth to be released.

the second title FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH will be released next winter, approximately three years after the original FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE released

With this news we should be expecting the game to release sometime around December 2023 to Febuary 2024.
